Ear Care

From 5th January 2022 patients will no longer require a referral from the GP practice and patients can call directly to make an appointment at health centre reception desks, self-refer to ear care clinics across all sectors.

These dedicated ear care clinics will provide patients with a holistic and individualised approach to ear care.

Reception staff will be first point of contact for patients when self-referring.

This service is available on :

• Monday PM – Govan Health Centre
• Friday All Day – Gorbals Health Centre

All other South Treatment Room ear care appointments are irrigation only appointments (until informed otherwise).

Advice for staff/patients on booking appointments:

1. Patients must oil ears for a minimum of 3-4 times daily for a period of 7 days consecutive (olive oil, almond oil, or pharmacy issued wax softener
2. Please ensure appointment date is booked after oiling period of 7 days.
3. Patients should be booked for irrigation appointment firstly,

Methods of using oil to soften ear wax

1. Lie on one side with affected ear uppermost.
2. Instill 5 drops of Olive or Almond oil (unless you are allergic to nuts) at room temperature.
3. Remain lying for 10 to 15minutes.
4. When you sit up wipe away any excess oil that may run out from ear lobe downwards.
5. Do NOT put any cotton wool, tissue paper etc. into the ear.
6. Do NOT use cotton buds to clean your ears.
7. Repeat procedure with the other ear if required.
8. Oil ear(s) using the above method 3-4 times daily for 7-10 days.
9. The Treatment Room Nurse will re-assess your ear to determine if the wax is soft enough for irrigation/microsuction.
